Printing leaflets for small businesses

Printing leaflets sounds like something you would have done in the year 2000. Is it still worth it? The truth is that printing leaflets is still a great idea for the marketing of your small business. Leaflets can be great for general campaigns, and also for more specific product releases.

Yes, we live in the digital age but, if they are done correctly, leaflets can be a great marketing tool for your business. This is in large part because leaflets are now often overlooked, which means you can take advantage of this and create great promotional tools.

In this post, we go through the process of leaflet design and print and the reasons why you should do it for your business, as well as some ideas for leaflet design.

  1. Write the text

Of course, before printing leaflets you need to start by thinking about what you want to communicate. Leaflets are great for getting your message across, so if you want a great leaflet design, don’t make the same mistake as many brands: the text of your leaflet is equally (if not more) as important as the imagery.

When you start designing your leaflet think about what it is that you want to share with your audience and write it down. Leaflets can contain a lot of information, however, less is more. The text needs to be concise, so choose your words carefully. You want to say as much information as you can in the fewest words possible.

  1. Make it scannable

Once you’ve done the copywriting, add headings, summarise difficult information with bullet points and highlight the most important information. You only have the first few seconds of a person’s attention to make them want to read more, and they will spend those seconds scanning your leaflet for key information, rather than reading it word by word.

People can then read the information whenever they want, which is an advantage that other forms of advertising don’t have. Then, once you have thought about the structure of your leaflet and what the key points are, you can elaborate and add more information.

  1. Add a call to action

What is it that you want your target audience to do as a result of reading your leaflet? Add a call to action to your leaflet, for example, asking them to call the phone number of your business, make bookings or attend an event. Here are some tips for writing the best calls to action.

  1. Choose the dimensions of your leaflet

Think about how you will distribute your leaflet. If you want to leave them through letterboxes, a postcard size (A6) might be the most appropriate size. For on-street leaflets, A7 is very popular. Once you have chosen the size of your leaflet you can think about the visual elements you can fit in it.

  1. Design your leaflet

When done right, leaflets stand out. They can be very visually appealing and grab people’s attention. You can be creative and make the most of your design skills. Make something that is on-brand but still a bit different, and most importantly, make it look professional. After all, this will be an extension of your brand, and people will associate your leaflet to the quality of the services and product that you provide.

Choose powerful images that are really eye-catching but which are still related to the messages that you want to communicate. Using random images and colours is not the best approach.

  1. Print your leaflets

When it comes to printing leaflets, you have various options. Quality paper is a must – most leaflets are printed full colour on gloss art paper to convey the best image possible of the company.

To print your leaflets you will need a digital file with adequate bleed and crop marks to ensure you can print all the way to the edge of the paper.

Advantages of leaflets

If you are still wondering whether you should be designing and printing leaflets, here are some reasons you should consider:

They are cost-effective

Leaflets are very affordable. It doesn’t cost much to design them (you can do it yourself), print them and then distribute them. In fact, they can be a great in-store addition, which saves you the effort and time of distributing them outside. Leaflets can work very well when partnered with other marketing activities within a campaign.

They are great for brand awareness

Leaflet distribution is one of the best ways of letting people know about your business, product or service, which is fantastic if they’ve never heard about your brand before. Besides, they are also great for promoting events, as you can distribute them around specific areas.
